Alnwick Rum was first created in the early 1900s to appeal to Northumberland tastes. It was introduced to satisfy the hardy folk of north east England with their history of seafaring, and demand for it has continued to grow despite modern trends towards less robust dark rums and white cocktail bases. As ever it is produced to the secret requirements of the Board of The Alnwick Rum Company for a fine old blend of Jamaican and Guyanan rums. Unlike many dark rums of today it is a 43% alcohol by volume spirit so dark in colour that despite having distinctive reddish hues it appears almost as black as its iconic label.
That rich dark liquor of Alnwick Rum is a blend of fine rums from Jamaica and Guyana aged in former bourbon and whisky barrels for up to three years. It is in a different league from its ubiquitous, mass market dark rum counterparts. With its distinctive, spicy, confectionary aroma it delivers satisfyingly robust notes of dried fruits and toffee and a delightfully long finish.
Alnwick Rum may be enjoyed on its own at body temperature as an after dinner digestif. Equally it is a delightful tincture over ice and it makes a superb cocktail base. With Fentiman’s non-alcoholic Ginger Beer, for example, it makes a Storm Force as formidable as anything Joseph Conrad might have experienced.
Whether you are looking for a gift or a well-deserved treat for yourself, Alnwick Rum is the perfect choice.
